Reception

Our Reception classes are called The Bees. In Bees our two classes are Honey Bees and Bumble Bees. We work very hard in Bees and enjoy learning through play.

This year is our first year at Moss Lane and we will take part in lots of fun activities to help us learn throughout the year. Our topics will include learning about birds and experiencing a visit from some real owls and other birds of prey. We also learn all about minibeasts in the summer term which includes a trip to go on a mini beast hunt! We love to make use of the local area, and we harvest apples from our school allotment to bake apple crumbles back at school.

In Reception we learn to read by learning how to decode words phonetically. We learn many new letter sounds and how to blend these sounds together to read. As we learn to read our letters, we also learn to write our own names, words and short phrases.

This year we will experience many activities to develop our physical development. This will involve fine motor control activities to prepare our hands for writing and larger scale gross motor activities to keep our bodies fit and healthy. We begin PE lessons after Christmas and enjoy using small and large apparatus both indoors and outside.

Reception teachers plan exciting topics to support the children’s learning and development. Each day children have the opportunity to access adult-led and child-initiated activities which cover the Early Years Curriculum. We regularly post photographs and information about our learning on our e-Schools page so that our families can see what we have been up to.

Our provision in Reception delivers the requirements of the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, and covers the seven areas of Learning and Development. We utilise Birth to Five Matters as our non-statutory curriculum guidance, which encourages an holistic approach to learning and places strong emphasis on the individual child. From this and our Long Term Plan, our teachers deliver a bespoke curriculum which meets both the statutory requirements and the needs of our unique cohort of children. Attainment at the end of Reception Year is assessed against the Early Learning Goals, and this is shared with parents in July.

There is a strong emphasis on independence in Reception, and on developing the skills which are needed to become an effective learner. We teach the children about the Zones of Regulation to help them to begin to identify and manage their own emotional needs.

Do you have a child starting reception class this year?

If so, your child will be participating in the reception baseline assessment (RBA) within the first 6 weeks of starting reception. The purpose of the assessment is to provide the starting point for a new measure that will help parents understand how well schools support their pupils to progress between reception and year 6 / the end of key stage 2.

What is the RBA?

The RBA is a short, interactive and practical assessment of your child’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills when they begin school, using materials that most children of your child’s age will be familiar with. It is statutory for all schools from September 2021.

Its main purpose is to create a starting point to measure the progress schools make with their pupils.
